Rethinking Patient Care

Challenge

In collaboration with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), we conducted an in-depth investigation into the phenomenon of low-value care. These are medical interventions that, despite clinical evidence showing they offer little to no health benefits, are still in practice and can even be harmful. Beyond the potential health risks, these practices also incur unnecessary financial costs, adding a significant burden to the healthcare system.

Our Main Question: Why do patients ask for low-value care?

Implementation

Recognizing that much of the existing research has primarily focused on the perspectives of healthcare professionals, our study shifts the focus towards the patients. We aim to understand why patients sometimes seek out these low-value medical interventions. By examining this issue through the lens of those it directly affects, we hope to uncover insights that can lead to more effective healthcare strategies and alleviate the strain on our healthcare system.
